Description of HPA Series Rotary Quarter-Turn Pneumatic Actuators

Hearken HPA series quarter turn pneumatic actuator is a compact rack-and-pinion pneumatic actuator for 90° rotation on ball valves, butterfly valves, and industrial dampers. Two symmetrical pistons convert compressed air into smooth torque output in both double-acting and spring-return.

      Specifications & Features:

        • Zero Side-Load Piston Design: Symmetrical pistons balance internal drive forces. Hearken design stops shaft binding and protects your stem seals from premature fluid leaks.
        • Standardized Housing Across Models: Our double-acting and spring-return quarter turn pneumatic actuators use the same outer housing and mounting dimensions. You can standardize your mounting brackets and simplify spare parts inventory across different safety loops.
        • Direct ISO 5211 & NAMUR Mounting: Bottom mounting pads match ISO 5211 tolerances (F03 through F25) for direct assembly onto your valve topworks (If your valve is ISO 5211 standard). Top and front ports conform to NAMUR (VDI/VDE 3845) standards, so you can attach limit switch boxes, positioners, and solenoid valves without custom adapters.
        • Precise ±5° External Travel Adjustment: Independent stainless steel adjustment bolts on both end caps give you precise stroke calibration at open and closed positions, simplifying final valve alignment in your workshop.
        • 1,000,000-Cycle Durability: Tested to 1,000,000 operations and backed by an 18-month factory warranty to lower your field service costs.
        • Corrosion-Resistant Housing: Hard-anodized internal cylinder walls reduce friction. On the outside, epoxy-coated end caps protect against chemical splash and outdoor weather.
        • 100% Factory Inspection: We test every HPA series quarter-turn pneumatic actuator for leakage, rotation angle, and torque output before dispatch. Stamped serial numbers give your team complete batch traceability.
        • HPA Series Pneumatic Actuator CertificatesISO 9001, CE, ATEX, SIL3, EAC and IP67

      Our Surface Treatment Options:

While hard anodizing is our default manufacturing process, we also offer alternative surface treatments to match different market needs and OEM build specifications:

      • Untreated (Raw Aluminum): Offers the lowest unit price, making it a practical choice for high-volume orders, entry-level valve packages, or mild operating environments.
      • Ordinary Anodizing: A balanced option that uses a shorter, room-temperature process to build a 5–10 micron coating for basic rust and corrosion protection.

      • Hard Anodizing (Hearken Standard): Built for maximum lifespan using a full-duration, low-temperature process. It creates a thick 25–35+ micron hard coating on both housings and pistons—preventing internal wear, protecting O-rings from air leaks, and resisting particle damage during high-cycle operation.

Whether your target market requires competitive upfront pricing or long-term operational reliability, we supply actuators built to your exact order specifications.

Material & Engineering Options for Actuator Cost Optimization

Hearken quarter-turn pneumatic actuators come standard with full-specification materials for long service life and stable performance. We also provide flexible material and design options across cylinders, end caps, and drive shafts to match different budget requirements:

      Cylinder Weight & Wall Thickness:
Hearken quarter-turn pneumatic actuators use full-thickness aluminum walls—using 10%–15% more metal—to handle high working pressures without flexing or leaking. For budget-focused orders, we can supply lighter-weight cylinder options with reduced wall thickness, or shorter body lengths for lower-torque applications, to lower raw material costs and unit prices.
      End Cap Weight & Design:
Quarter-turn pneumatic actuators come standard with thick die-cast aluminum end caps for strong pressure resistance and long-term sealing. For basic or lower-pressure applications, we can supply lighter end-cap structures to reduce manufacturing costs. We also offer alternative end-cap designs from Gen 1 to Gen 4 to match different valve automation setups and price points.
Drive Shaft Material, Dimensions & Length:
For drive shafts, we machine solid 307g components from high-strength 45# carbon steel (AISI 1045) with thick nickel plating for high torque strength and rust protection. We can also customize drive shafts for quarter-turn pneumatic actuators using alternative carbon steel grades (such as 20# steel), adjusted shaft lengths/extensions for specific valve mounting, or reduced dimensions to fit strict target prices.

We supply quarter-turn pneumatic actuators built to your exact order specifications, whether your focus is full-spec reliability or competitive market pricing.

When raw materials aluminum and steel arrive, Hearken inspects the thickness and material density first. We precision-saw each cylinder to exact batch lengths. You can get consistent housing dimensions across your order and reliable structural strength under line pressureOur multi-axis CNC machines handle precision milling, boring, and exterior profiling in-house. We maintain tight tolerances across all machined components to keep piston movement smooth and avoid drive-shaft binding under operating pressure. We use precision steel gauges to check the cylinder bore, shaft hole alignment, and thread depth on every batch of HPA housings. This ensures smooth shaft rotation and prevents mechanical sticking.Extruded aluminum bodies and die-cast pistons undergo hard anodizing in a low-temperature electrolyte bath. This process builds a uniform 25-50 μm protective oxide layer with surface hardness up to 350-500 HV. It provides both the cylinder body and piston with high wear resistance and strong corrosion protection.

Step 5: Precision & Safety Assembly

Step 6: Leak Testing & Stroke Adjustment

Step 7: IP Rating & Waterproof Testing

Step 8: Torque & Spring Return Testing

      Purchase Guide

Step 1: Action TypeStep 2: Torque & Air Pressure
      • Double Acting (DA): Air pressure powers both the opening and closing stroke.
      • Spring Return (SR): Air opens (or closes) the valve, while internal springs force it shut automatically if air pressure drops.
      • Start with the required valve operating torque, then add a safety margin (typically 20-30%).
      • Match that torque against the actual working air supply (typically 4 to 7 bar).
      • Pick the actuator body size from our Torque Table that meets the target output under that exact operating pressure.
Step 3: Mounting Flange & Shaft FitStep 4: Working Temperature & Seals
      • Bottom Flange: Direct ISO 5211 matching from F03 up to F25.
      • Shaft Hole: Standard star-drive dimensions (square or double-D) fit straight onto the valve stem with zero extra brackets.
      • Normal Temp (-20°C to +80°C): Standard NBR seals work for water, general air, and basic gas pipelines.
      • Low Temp (-50°C to +80°C): Built with cold-resistant silicone seals for freezing climates or outdoor winter duty.
      • High Temp (-15°C to +150°C): Fitted with Viton seals to withstand steam lines and hot media.
Step 5: Custom Branding, Colors & AccessoriesNeed Help Selecting?
      • Custom Labels & Model Coding: Optional custom logo printing and client-specified model coding on product labels.
      • Custom Colors: Optional custom housing colors for actuator bodies and end caps to match specific brand standards.
      • One-Stop Accessory Integration: If additional control accessories are needed for product lines or valve packages—such as limit switch boxes, solenoid valves, positioners, air filter regulators, or manual overrides—we can mount and test them prior to shipment.

HPA Series Quarter Turn Pneumatic Actuator FAQs

Q1: How do I choose the right HPA quarter turn actuators model for my valve?
We size the HPA quarter turn air actuator based on your valve type, size, working pressure, medium, and operating temperature. Our technical team calculates the required torque and applies a 20% to 30% safety factor. For spring-return models, we configure the internal spring quantity to match your air supply.

Q2: Should I choose double-acting or single-acting (spring-return), and what is the smallest size available?
Select single-acting if your system needs a fail-safe position (fail-closed or fail-open) upon air loss. Single-acting models start from size HPA052 up to HPA400. Size HPA040 is only available as double-acting because its cylinder space is too small to fit internal safety springs.

Q3: Can the HPA series quarter turn pneumatic actuator handle special rotation angles or fine stroke adjustments?

Yes. Beyond the standard 90-degree stroke, we supply custom configurations for 120-degree and 180-degree rotations, as well as three-position models. Additionally, all standard HPA end caps feature dual adjustment screws that allow ±5° of fine travel adjustment at both open and closed positions.

Q4: Can 180-degree rotation actuators be made as single-acting (spring return)?

No. 180-degree rotation HPA quarter turn rack and pinion pneumatic actuators are only available as double-acting models. If your system requires a 180-degree stroke, it must be operated with double-acting air control.

Q5: Is the HPA industrial quarter turn pneumatic actuators suitable for low or high temperature environments?
Yes. We offer three standard thermal configurations:

      • Standard: -20°C to +80°C (NBR seals)
      • Low-Temperature: -50°C to +80°C (special low-temp seals)
      • High-Temperature: -15°C to +150°C (FKM/Viton seals)

Q6: Is the bottom mounting connection compatible with my valve, and can it be customized?
Yes. Our mounting interfaces comply with ISO 5211, DIN 3337, and NAMUR standards for direct valve mounting. We can also customize the bottom drive hole to a square shape, double-D, or custom dimensions to fit your valve stem at no extra charge.

Q7: What are the standard air port connection types and operating air pressure?
Our standard stock features G (BSP) threads for the air supply ports. We also provide NPT (FNPT) threads upon request at no extra cost. The default air hose connection is 8mm, and the recommended working air pressure is 2 to 8 bar.

Q8: Do you have magnetic-sensing quarter turn pneumatic actuators, and what accessories are available?
Yes. You can install a magnetic limit switch directly on our HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuator to get open and close position signals. You can also install an APL series limit switch box, solenoid valve, or electro-pneumatic positioner on the top NAMUR shaft. For manual operation when air or power fails, we supply HDM series declutchable gearboxes.

Q9: Do you offer OEM laser branding for wholesale or private-label orders?
Yes. We can laser mark your brand logo, part numbers, and custom serial numbers directly on the quarter turn actuator body or nameplate. During ordering, we will confirm the logo position, flange marking, and text design with you.

Q10: Do you provide pressure testing and quality inspection reports before shipment?
Yes. We perform 100% pressure and tightness testing on all HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuators before packaging. We can provide custom pressure test videos and inspection data sheets upon request for your order verification.

Q11: Can the HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuator mount directly to my valve?

Yes, it can mount directly if your valve has a standard ISO 5211 top flange and a matching stem; for non-standard valves or high-temperature lines (like steam), we provide a bracket and coupler to fit the connection and isolate pipeline heat to protect internal rubber seals and top-mounted accessories.

HPA Series Quarter Turn Pneumatic Actuator Technical Troubleshooting & Maintenance

Q1: Why is the HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuator not moving smoothly or sticking during operation?
A: This is usually caused by unstable air pressure, dirty air supply, or damaged inside gears. First, check if your air supply pressure is stable. If the pressure is fine, turn off the air, release all pressure, open the end caps, and check if the pistons or gears are dirty or damaged.

Q2: The quarter turn pneumatic actuator makes a loud noise when it reaches the end position. How do I fix this?
A: Loud noise at the end of the stroke is usually caused by loose position screws or loose inside plastic bearings. Try turning the actuator on and off a few times under normal air pressure. If the noise continues, adjust the two limit screws on the end caps until the actuator stops quietly at the full open or closed position.

Q3: When we connect a 3/2-way solenoid valve to a single-acting pneumatic actuator, it opens as soon as air is turned on, even without power. Why?
A: This happens when you use a Normally Open (NO) solenoid valve instead of a Normally Closed (NC) valve, or if the air tubes are connected wrong. For normal use, use a Normally Closed 3/2-way valve so air only enters when the solenoid receives power.

Q4: How do we adjust the open and close position on HPA pneumatic actuators if the valve does not close completely?
A: HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuators have two adjustment screws on the end caps. You can adjust the angle by ±5 degrees at both 0 degree (closed) and 90 degree (open) positions. Turn these screws to make the valve disk or ball align correctly.

Q5: How can we make a single-acting pneumatic actuator close slower to avoid water hammer in the pipe?
A: You can install a small speed control valve (flow regulator) on the air exhaust port of the solenoid valve or actuator. Reducing the exhaust air speed will make the spring close the valve slower, which stops water hammer.

Q6: Can HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuators be turned by hand if the air power fails?
A: Standard HPA quarter turn pneumatic actuators do not have a manual handle. If you need manual operation when air or power fails, you need to add a manual gearbox (HDM series) between the actuator and the valve.

Q7: Can we use nitrogen gas (N2) instead of compressed air to run HPA pneumatic actuators?
A: No, do not use nitrogen gas. High-pressure nitrogen drops in temperature very fast when released. The extreme cold can freeze the inside water, harden the rubber O-rings, and make the actuator get stuck. Always use clean, dry compressed air.

Q8: What happens if the air supply hose is too small for the pneumatic quarter turn actuator?
A: If the air hose is too thin or too small, not enough air can pass through. This makes the pneumatic quarter turn actuator move very slow and weak, especially on big models. Always use an air hose that matches the air hole size on the actuator.
