Why Engineers Specify Hearken Rotary Pneumatic Actuators

    ISO5211 Direct Mounting

Our rotary pneumatic actuators’ mounting faces follow ISO 5211 (F03, F04, F05, F07, F10, F12, F14, F16, etc….) and accessory pads follow NAMUR VDI/VDE 3845; the actuators are able to be directly mounted on your existing valve stem and accessories without adaptors

    Precise Positioning & Repeatability

Hearken actuators all go through CNC machining to ensure the precision for rack-to-pinion backlash below 0.1 mm and end-of-stroke angle within ±0.1°, giving ±5 % travel stops that stay repeatable for the full 1,000,000-cycle service life.

    Reliable Sealing, Zero Leakage

Hearken rotary actuators come with NBR as standard, FKM (Viton), EPDM, HNBR, and PTFE seals are available for media from -40 °C to +200 °C, including steam, solvents, etc. Each actuator is bubble-leak tested at 1.05 × rated pressure before shipment.

18 Months Warranty & Lifetime Support

Every hearken rotary pneumatic actuator ships with 18 months warranty and lifetime technical support by email, video call, or on-site engineer. For any quality issues resulting from our production, Hearken will arrange to ship repair parts free of charge within three working days .

    High Torque Output

Hearken actuators Output torque from 14 Nm up to 8,000 Nm (123 to 70,800 in-lbs), covering everything from light-duty ball valves to 36″ butterfly valves. Rack and pinion pneumatic actuators hold ±5 % torque stability across the full 0°–90° stroke, and our heavy-duty scotch yoke actuators can reach 250,000 Nm, with peak torque held at mid-stroke so the actuator never stalls when valve stem friction peaks.

    High-Speed Emergency Shut-Off

Hearken rotary pneumatic actuators are designed with Spring-return (fail-close / fail-open) and double-acting, it can be mounted with an independent solenoid valves drives the valve to its safe position after air loss or signal loss. The actuator holds position under full line pressure without creeping. It’s designed to EN 15714-3 and optionally SIL 3 capable for safety instrumented functions.

    Automatic Operation with Manual Override

Pneumatic actuators require compressed air to operate normally. But a declutchable handwheel can engage without tools and without disconnecting the air supply after installing the manual override, so operators can position the valve during commissioning, maintenance, or after air supply failure, air compressor failure, air line leak, or solenoid valve failure causing air supply interruption.

Hard Anodized Treatment VS Non-Hard Anodized Treatment

Hard Anodized Treatment VS Non-Hard Anodized Treatment

1,000,000-cycle durability, zero torque Loss, hearken rotary pneumatic actuator carries with hard-anodized surface treatment (standard 25–50 µm coating) plus a surface-treated piston and rack pinion. POM guide rings and self-lubricating bearings eliminate metal-to-metal contact at the rack pinion interface, so torque output stays at rated value even after 1,000,000 full stroke cycles, which was verified on our testing bench. Optional for supplying the repair kits for extending the lifetime.

                    FAQ

In addition to the standard 90-degree (quarter-turn) configuration, we provide customized 120-degree, 135-degree, and 180-degree rotary stroke actuator for three-way valves or special diverter valves, which also support mechanical limit adjustment.

We recommend the HPAS pneumatic actuator.

Yes, the weight is exactly the same. However, using an oxidized piston makes your rotary pneumatic actuators last much longer.
The hard-anodized surface provides excellent hardness to handle heavy side-loads. At the same time, it cuts down friction to give you better torque output. This protection also stops rust and galling, so the actuator won’t seize up in harsh environments.

The former refers to the torque output when the actuator is in a single-acting, air-to-open configuration, which must overcome the spring’s inherent torque; the latter refers to the torque output by the spring during closure when the air supply is cut off.

For high-frequency applications, we use high-wear-resistant POM plastic guide rings and bearings at the contact surfaces of the piston and rack-and-pinion, effectively preventing direct metal-to-metal friction. This significantly extends the service life of the seals, ensuring the product maintains stable torque output even after millions of cycles.

Yes, you can. Our actuators come with dual stroke adjustment screws for a ±5 tuning range. This feature lets your team easily recalibrate the valve on-site. It quickly fixes minor seat wear to ensure a tight, leak-free shutoff.

                    Ambient temperature.

Yes. Hearken Flow actuator’s pneumatic passages are fluid-dynamically optimized. When equipped with a high-Cv Quick Exhaust Valve, emergency opening and closing operations can easily be achieved in less than 1 second.

In addition to the standard configuration, we offer optional high-temperature-resistant Viton or low-temperature-resistant silicone O-rings and FKM. This ensures the actuator maintains airtightness and torque output in extreme ambient temperatures ranging from -60°C to +150°C.

Yes, it can withstand high temperatures.

For media such as dust and slurry, PTFE soft seals are highly susceptible to wear. We strongly recommend using metal hard-seal ball valves with our high-frequency actuators; this valve assembly effectively reduces unplanned downtime.

Higher air supply pressure results in greater output torque and faster switching speeds; insufficient pressure leads to weak actuation and slower speeds.

The top NAMUR mounting platform is constructed using one-piece molding or high-strength fasteners, ensuring that it will not loosen or cause signal distortion when mounting heavy-duty solenoid valves or positioners in applications with severe pipeline vibrations.

What is a quarter turn actuator?

In the technical tongue, a quarter turn actuator is a device designed to rotate a valve or other type of flow control mechanism a quarter turn, or 90 degrees, to open or close the passage of fluids or gases. This type of actuator is the bread and butter for ball valves, butterfly valves, and plug valves, enabling them to perform their duties with efficiency and reliability.

What is the difference between quarter turn and multi turn actuators?

                    Quarter Turn Actuators:

                    • Functionality: Designed to rotate a valve or damper through a 90-degree movement to open or close the flow path.
                    • Application: Commonly used with ball valves, butterfly valves, and plug valves.
                    • Operation Speed: Typically offer rapid operation, suitable for applications requiring quick open/close actions.
                    • Precision: Provides on/off control rather than precise flow modulation.
                    • Energy Source: Can be powered by pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic means.

                    Multi Turn Actuators:

                    • Functionality: Capable of multiple turns (more than 360 degrees) to operate valves that require several rotations to go from open to closed positions.
                    • Application: Primarily used with gate valves, globe valves, and some types of linear valves that need detailed positioning.
                    • Operation Speed: Operates more slowly compared to quarter turn actuators, offering precise control over valve positioning.
                    • Precision: Excels in applications requiring fine adjustment of the flow.
                    • Energy Source: Like quarter turn actuators, they can be powered by pneumatic, electric, or hydraulic systems.

                    Key Differences:

                    • Rotation Range: Quarter turn actuators perform a quarter turn (90 degrees), suitable for quick operation valves. Multi turn actuators can perform multiple rotations, ideal for valves requiring precise positioning.
                    • Valve Compatibility: Quarter turn actuators are used with valves that need only a quarter turn to operate. Multi turn actuators are compatible with valves that require multiple turns to open or close.
                    • Control Type: Quarter turn actuators are typically used for on/off control. Multi turn actuators are better suited for applications requiring precise flow control.
                    • Application Suitability: Quarter turn actuators are preferred for fast action and simplicity. Multi turn actuators are chosen for detailed flow regulation and situations where precision is critical.

Applications of quarter turn pneumatic actuator

Quarter turn pneumatic actuators are widely utilized across various industries due to their efficiency, reliability, and the straightforward nature of their operation. These actuators use compressed air to rotate a valve 90 degrees, allowing for quick opening or closing of the valve. This rapid action makes them particularly suitable for a range of applications where speed and dependability are crucial. Here are some of the key applications:
